CHESTERTOWN, Md. — The Washington College men’s lacrosse team has named its captains for the 2014 season – seniors Jim Cusick (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall), Ted DiSalvo (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River), Casey McKnight(Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), and Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, Md./Franklin).
Cusick, an attackman, started all 18 games for the Shoremen in 2013, finishing second on the team in goals (24) and tied for third in points (32). He enjoyed a standout comeback season after missing all but the first five games of the 2012 season due to injury.
DiSalvo took over the starting job in goal for the Shoremen last spring and posted a .576 save percentage and an 8.98 goals-against average. He also scooped up 33 ground balls.
McKnight, who has started every game on defense for the Shoremen each of the past two seasons, is a two-time All-Centennial Conference selection (2012 first team, 2013 second team). Last spring, he recorded 29 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.
Nowicki was named a 2013 All-America honorable mention and a 2012 and 2013 All-Centennial Conference second-team selection. Last spring, he finished second on the team in points (33) and third in both goals (20) and assists (13). He also scooped up 28 ground balls in 2013.
The Shoremen finished 13-5 overall and 5-3 in Centennial Conference play in 2013, advancing to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second consecutive year. Washington beat Colorado College, 10-7, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In the second round, the Shoremen gave eventual NCAA Division III National Champion Stevenson one of its toughest tests of the postseason, leading the Mustangs, 12-11, after the third quarter before falling by a 17-13 final. The Shoremen were ranked as high as fourth in the nation in Division III during the regular season and wrested the Charles B. Clark Cup away from archrival Salisbury University with a 7-6 win over the Sea Gulls in the annual “War on the Shore” rivalry game.
The Shoremen are scheduled to open the 2014 season with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Goucher onFebruary 22nd.
